YstradTV: Proud Sponsors of Ystrad RFC Under 8's

Last season YstradTV was approached by Ystrad RFC about possibly sponsoring their new Under 8’s team. Well, it’s all about the kids, so how could we say no!

So this season, we’ll be featuring the development of Ystrad RFC under 8’s, who we proudly sponsor, along with the Gough Arms and Bryncelyn Brewery (see link). We even got our advertising space on the sleeves…which I think is very cool!

Player's can start playing for the team when they reach their 6th birthday and there's no sexual discrimination on this team, boys AND girls welcome!
The team train on Tuesday nights at Ystrad RFC's ground at 5.30 pm until 6.30 with the big match days on a Sunday.

The team are always looking for new players and for all those parents a bit nervous about unleashing their children into the rugby world, there's no physicality, it's only tag rugby at this age. Tag rugby is like touch rugby, but each child has a velcro belt on with 2 tags attatched. When the tags are pulled off by the opposition, it counts as a tackle.

The children are really enjoying it and I think it can be said it is the only age where the players look forward to training more than the game itself!

Anyway, like I said, we'll be looking at the progress of the team from time to time this season and here's the 1st instalment (they played 2 games, so its a big report this week):

With only 3 training sessions and 1 game behind them, the Mighty Mini-Blues notched their first victory of the season on Sunday against Britton Ferry, winning 9-5.

Britton Ferry kids obviously love their rugby, with 21 children turning up for their under 8 team, so it was decided Ystrad's strong team of the bare 7 would face Ferry in 2 seperate games, with the little 'uns saying "Bring It On!"

The 1st game (against the older under 8's, who looked like they were all in the weights room in comparison to the younger Ystrad 8's) kicked off and Ferry notched up 4 quick tries, utilising the space left open by the vastly inexperienced Ystrad team. However with Coach Rowan Davies's organisation skills quickly put to the test and with the constant advice from the touchline form fellow Ystrad coaches Stu Tay and Daniel Davies (yes that is me!) Coach Davies Snr got the Blues using the open space to good effect.

Liam and Adam's pace was the constant thorn in the Ferry side, and it was only a matter of time before Adam crossed for his 1st of the game, punishing Ferry for some narrow play.

After Ferry added another 2 tries, Adam again crossed for his 2nd of the game, leavign the Ferry team in his dust as he darted towards the line. 7-2 Half-Time.

The 2nd half kicked off and Ferry scored a quick try with probably the best dummy pass ever, bamboozling the whole Ystrad team.

Ystrad's tagging was put to the test and they didn't shy away, with Jack, Keenan and Ayden particluarly heroic in defense, but credit to the whole team, who were beginning to get tired, compared to Ferry who changed their team around, utilizing their bench.

Ystrad came close on numerous occasions, often stopped short by the 6 tag rule. Ferry's fresh legs resulted in another 5 tries before Liam, who threatened all game, ducked and dove like a young Shane Williams to score Ystrad's 3rd - 13-3.

Ferry again brought on fresh legs and added another 2. Final score 15-3, the win deserved, but a great performance from the Mini-Blues, in only their 2nd game.

The fear of the coaches was that the team would be dejected, but not this bunch, oh no! When asked if they wanted to play against the younger 8's, the enthusiastic approval could be heard back in the home land of the Blues.

The game kicked off and organised chaos erupted, and Ferry crossed for a controversial 1st try, putting the ball down over the dead ball line, in any other game would have resulted in riots throughout the village, but this was the under 8's after all!

Ystrad hit back immediately, with Keenan doing brillaintly to open up some space for Maddison (loaned to the Blues by Britton Ferry) to level the score.

The game mirrored a tennis match as the teams went back and forth scoring, with Keenan outpacing everyone to score in the corner for Ystrad's 2nd.

Ystrad soon added a 3rd after a crunching tackle, yes tackle, on Adam. Liam played the whistle to cross the line, and soon added Ystrad's 4th, running the whole length of the pitch, hugging the line. Half-Time 4-2.

The 2nd half kicked off, with Celyn and Darcy, elected as the teams kick off person and did their job to perfection. Darcy passing to Ayden, who was stopped just short after the whistle, but didn't let his good work go to waste, passing to Jack to make it 5-2.
Ferry loaned out some of their players to the Blues for this game and it was good to see them relishing the game time, resulting in all the loanees scoring tries, Iestyn and Connor.

Liam completed his hat-trick before the end and not content with that added his 4th, going one way, then deciding to take the long way round to score in the opposite corner. Final Score 9-5.

Well done to the whole team in their 1st taste of success!

Sports Roundup

With International’s at both the round and oval ball shaped variety this weekend, local sporting action was slightly limited.

With Wales entertaining Germany at the Millenium Stadium, in their Euro 2008 qualifier, which unfortunately they lost 2-0 thanks to a brace from Miraslav Klose, the football season came to a halt…as far as I’m aware (I may be wrong, please tell me if I am!)

However, with the Welsh rugby team kicking off their World Cup campaign Sunday lunch time, the rugby fixtures remained unscathed.
This weeks main report is of Ystrad’s Division 5 South West game against Trebanos, written by Ashley James (and edited slightly by YTV):

Ystradgynlais 24 Trebanos 8
Ystradgynlais maintained their winning start to the season with a hard-fought 24-8 victory over Trebanos at the Rec. The home supporters saw little evidence of the flowing rugby that the team produced throughout last year’s campaign instead it was sheer guile and determination that paid dividends and carried them to a well deserved victory.

It was the visitors who began the brightest and took a surprise lead within the opening minutes when winger Lee Packman capitalized on a mix-up in the Ystradgynlais back-line for the early score. Blues full-back Shaun Harries was put under intense pressure at the edge of his own 22-yard line and was forced into a costly mistake, surrendering possession to Packman who ran the un-converted try in from close range.
The home side responded immediately to level the scores; under immense pressure from the Ystradgynlais pack a 5-metre scrum of the visitors buckled in retreat and caused the ball to spill free. Flanker Matthew Owen was alert and the first to react pouncing on the ball for the easiest of scores.
Minutes later Owen helped himself to a second; some strong work from the home pack drove the team up-field and the resulting quick ball proved crucial as centre Ceri Lewis ran a beautiful angle in mid-field, evaded two tacklers only to be brought down inches from the line, again though it was the Blues No6 who was the first to arrive and powered over for the try and a 10-5 lead.

Ystrad really made their visitors suffer for the earlier missed opportunities by stretching their lead to 17-5. Shaun Harries broke the length of the field before being felled agonizingly close to the line, however from the resulting scrum the hosts again made their forward dominance count by driving over for the try with No8 David Love emerging from the pile the scorer, fly-half Hywel Evans added the conversion for a 12 point lead.

The end to end nature of the first half continued and the visitors rallied and eventually reduced the deficit slightly slotting over a close range penalty to stay within touching distance at the half 17-8.

The hosts further increase their lead as the game drew to a close, replacement centre Jamie Roberts all but putting the game to bed by breaking a first time tackle and cantering over untouched for the close range score, giving The Blues the bonus point. Evans added his second conversion of the day for a 24-8 score-line with barely ten minutes left on the clock.

In the divisions other local fixture, Cwmtwrch went down narrowly, again, to Alltwen 30-22. I’m hearing great things from the Cwm camp this season, with the club on the up. Despite the narrow defeats to date, the club is once again boasting a youth team and that 1st result is only a matter of time away.
Scott Evans grabbing Cwm’s only try of the game, converted by Oliver Jenkins, who duly added 5 penalties. Apologies to the Cwm faithful, Tom Addey sent me a detailed report, however I could not open the email and he has since gone on his holidays).

Going up the Valley and the divisions, Abercraf went down 34-5 at Glyncorrwg. It’s been a disappointing start to the campaign for Aber, who will no doubt pick up in the not too distant future. The second string have been drawn against bitter rivals Ystrad in the cup, which promises to be another great derby game.

Also in Division 4 South West, Ystalyfera’s poor start continued, going down narrowly to Bryncoch 17-15. Fera were leading through ex Cwm centre, Jason Addey’s boot and a superb individual try by Matthew Scott. However Bryncoch came back to steal the win.

Our high flying local team, Cwmllynfell (did anyone see them on the BBC documentary about Bonymaen, that featured Ystrad’s very own Ryan ‘Boris’ Perrott and Scott ‘Dog’ Davies and Cwm resident Nick ‘The Ginger Ninja’ Clancy), sorry got side-tracked there, Cwmllynfell won 19-6 at Dunvant thanks to a brace from stalwart Jim Morgan and 3 Owain Higgins penalties.

I’d just like to add to Aber, Fera and Cwmllynfell, I would very much appreciate anyone watching the games (and this goes for the football teams too) to send me a bit of a match report, or even just the score and scorers. You can email it to me ystradmediatrust@googlemail.com or text me on the YTV number 07805 019 822.

That’s it for another week…next Saturday, no rugby due to the big World Cup game, Wales v the Aussies in Cardiff! It should be a good ‘un!

Pic Of The Week!

IT'S BACK!!!! Pic Of The Week returns, however no-one has sent any pics in for a while, but I don't blame you! No, no, I understand! It's been the summer with lovely hot weather and people out and about doing far better things than sending in...hang on a minute, that's a load of piggy poop (like the little pun there!)! It's been terrible weatherwise, however this can only mean one thing...people have been abroad for their summer hols!

So I know you've all had your cameras on you, whether it be the little throw away ones or the nice expensive digital kind, you all must have taken at least one picture this summer! So send them to the usual address, ystradmediatrust@googlemail.com

I want all sorts, funny, sad, meaningful, un-meaningful, naked pics on the beach! Ok, maybe the latter can just be sent in but not shown on the blog! haha!

Has anyone taken a pic with some random person in the background like you see on magazines like FHM? Let's get this year (I refer to it as the start of the year, because school and sport season starts now) be a good 'un and lets all get involved!

That's all I got to say about that!

So I went for this weeks Pic Of The Week with the Hog Roast of Ystrad on Bank Holiday Sunday...'twas a lovely bit of meat!
I was going to show a close up of the beast, but thought it may offend some, but you can see it on YstradR RFC's website (see the link to the left).

Children Of Craig-Y-Nos

The following blog post was emailed to me by a lovely lady named Carole Reeves:

The first ever exhibition of photographs of children and young women who were patients in the Adelina Patti Hospital, better known as Craig-y-nos Castle, will open at The Welfare Hall, Ystradgynlais, Brecon Road, Swansea SA9 1JJ (Tel 01639 843163) on Friday 7 September until Saturday 29 September 2007. The exhibition has been organised by Ann Shaw, herself an ex-patient (1950-1954). To coincide with the exhibition, a reunion of patients and staff will take place on Sunday 9 September 2007 at 12 noon at Craig-y-nos Castle, Brecon Road, Pen-y-cae, Powys SA9 1GL (Tel 01639 730205).

It was less than a year ago that Ann began her search for information about the Hospital, which served as a tuberculosis sanatorium from 1922 to 1959. After discovering that all the patient records had been destroyed, she submitted an entry to the BBC Mid-Wales community history site, and placed small articles in the Brecon and Radnor Express and the South Wales Evening Post, hoping that they might draw out information to piece together the missing decades.

Says Ann, ‘Little did I know I was about to tap into the collective memory of a whole community, of people with stories waiting to be told, many of whom had never spoken of their experiences before, some painful, some happy but all with their own unique tales of their time isolated from their families and the rest of the world in this secluded sanatorium on the edge of the Brecon Beacons. E-mails arrived from New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the UK, along with a flood of letters and phone calls. I have been deluged with photographs, approaching 600, tiny scraps of history, some barely more than 2”x 2”, faded but clearly treasured.’

Some of the photographs and stories she has collected can be seen at: http://www.craig-y-nos.blogspot.com/ About 60 photographs have been selected for the exhibition, which will also be online at: www.childrenofcraigynos.com

The exhibition is part of an oral history project in which Ann is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Sleeping Giant Foundation and the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine, University College London.

Dr Carole Reeves, Outreach Historian at the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine, says, ‘We are recording the memories of many of the people you will see in the photographs. It will be the first ever collective account by patients and staff of life inside a tuberculosis sanatorium and is therefore a unique heritage project. The time period, from the 1920s to the 1950s, is also crucial because of the tremendous activity by medical professionals and other groups to understand the nature of tuberculosis, who was most likely to catch it, how to diagnose it, and how to treat it. Although tuberculosis was known to be an infectious disease caused by a microscopic organism (Mycobacterium tuberculosis), the real treatment breakthrough came in 1947 when the first effective medicine, an antibiotic called streptomycin, became available in Britain. The children of Craig-y-nos were among the first to receive this new ‘wonder’ drug.’

The photographs, taken between 50 and 85 years ago, give us a unique insight into life inside a tuberculosis sanatorium. They do not offer a pictorial record of day-to-day events because the people who took them were, first and foremost, recording their happiest moments. Photography is all about happy memories, after all. We do not see the sadness, pain, disappointment and fear that many of these children and young adults experienced during months, often years, inside the walls of Craig-y-nos. What the pictures do reveal, in a most evocative way, is a youthful stoicism and zest for life at a time when TB in the industrial areas of south Wales claimed the lives of 12 young men and 17 young women a year in every community of 6000 people. Hundreds more, like the children of Craig-y-nos, were deprived by chronic ill health of education, work and family life.

For 37 years, Craig-y-nos provided the pure, invigorating air swirling around balconies open to the elements that was considered beneficial, even curative, in patients with tuberculosis. Its situation amongst pinewoods in a magnificent rural environment on the edge of the Brecon Beacons in the Upper Swansea Valley, provides the backdrop to many of the photographs in this remarkable exhibition.
Ann Shaw and Carole Reeves will be co-authoring a book entitled The Children of Craig-y-nos, which will tell the story of the sanatorium for the first time and pays tribute to those who made it possible. As Ann says, ‘We made it, hundreds didn’t.’

EVENTS - Ystradgynlais Welfare Hall

The good people at Ystradgynlais Welfare Hall are bringing yet another great event to the, in my opinion, not used enough Hall!
This looks like a great course for all you people wanting to become the next Amy Winehouse (well, I suppose most have got the social part down already! Just joking!) or Arctic Monkey's or whoever it is you crazy kids are listening to these days!
It all has to begin somewhere and learning to read the notes is a good a place as any! So become the next "British Music Talent" and go along to the course! I've been talking about taking up the keyboard for a while now, so I might just go along to what sounds like a good little course!

Weekly Sports Roundup!

It's been a while my friends, but the rugby and football season's began last Saturday and it was a mixed bag for our teams of the Valley's! However the Welsh team is such dire straights going into the World Cup, Gareth Jenkins was lookng at some of the Ystrad boys at Gowerton (if you believe that, you'll believe anything)!
It is a fact Mr Jenkins was at the game, but it probably had more to do with his support for friend and new Ystrad Team Manager, Anthony Buchanan!

Anyway, back to the results and this weeks full report comes from Cwmtwrch RFC, thanks to Tom Addey for sending it in and I appeal again at the start of the season for teams to send in their match reports to our usual address: ystradmediatrust@googlemail.com (I know it's long but put us in your address book once and it's done then!)

New Dock Stars 17 Cwmtwrch 11:
The ‘07-‘08 season started with Cwm travelling down to the land of the Turks to play New Dock Stars. This was unknown territory for Cwmtwrch, as they had not played against New Dock since before the war (Dash remembers he played!!!!). There was a good crowd and everybody was eager for Cwm to get the season off on the right foot.

The game began and New Dock immediately put the Cwm line under pressure, some good defensive work kept the large New Dock forwards out for large periods until Dock opened the scoring with a try from their inside centre who split the Cwm defence to score the opening try – they missed the conversion; 5-0.

The New Dock pack were well drilled, excelling with their tight play and it has to be said that they were really getting the upper hand over the makeshift Cwm 8, leading to their second try from the tight head prop who crashed over from a short distance; 12-0.

Cwm began to settle down and put some nice moves together with both forwards and backs crossing the gain line into the New Dock half. This was Cwm`s best period of the half and with the whistle beckoning a nice move between the three-quarters led to a excellent try for Scott “Ribs” Evans which went unconverted; 12-5 Half-Time.

Cwm were awarded an early penalty inside the New Dock half and Oli Jenkins stepped up and slotted it through the middle; 12-8.
Both sides were trying to open the game out and a lot of silly mistakes before Cwm were awarded another penalty, which again Oli Jenkins converted to make the score line 12-11 to New Dock.

Both sets of supporters were now engrossed in a very tight finish and it has to be said that the Cwm 8 were feeling the pace. With ten minutes remaining the New Dock 8 again piled on the pressure which led to another unconverted try; 17-11.Cwm really rallied round for the last 5 mins of the game and some lovely play led to a 3 to 2 situation which left Ceri Watkins free to run in for a try only to be brought back by the ref`s whistle for a forward pass. The final whistle was blown and New Dock deservedly won the game by 17 points to 11.

Video Of The Week!

Well we've had the Pic of the Week, Couple of the Week, Joke of the Week, so why not Video of the Week!

It's only 5 days until the Rugby World Cup begins with hosts France taking on the Pumas, Argentina (who I think will do very well this World Cup!). Wales kick off their World Cup campaign on Sunday against the mighty Canadians, who most will feel we should beat convincingly...me included! I don't think the Canadians should be taken lightly, but if we can't beat them, then we shouldn't call rugby our national sport!

Th favourites for the World Cup (bringing us back to the video) are New Zealand or the All Black as they are affectionately known! People who don't even like rugby know about the All Blacks and the reason for this? No, not their silky rugby skills, not their powerfull takles, the little dance they do at the start of the game!

Ok, maybe that was a bit harsh to call it a little dance, but it is an institution in rugby world! No matter what country you're from, you can't help but love the HAKA!

So, in honour of the World Cup and in honour of the 'little dance', here's a video I was sent advertising a certain New Zealan product...enjoy!

And here's the proper version...
